I've been a Stephen King fan for almost 35 years - and honestly, I don't get the love this book is getting. Don't get me wrong, it is ok. Stephen King isn't capable of writing a BAD book (imho). It is just that this book had the potential to be scary - or at least pleasantly creepy. It should have been suspenseful at least. All the ingredients were there. A haunted carnival, a serial killer, psychics. . .Instead we got a pleasantly nostalgic tale about a 21 year old who worked at a carnival in 1973. Most of the first half of the book was about the main character pining for his first love while working at a carnival which was rumored to be haunted. The ghost played a very minor role in the story, as did the killer, who wasn't revealed until the very end. As a mystery, it failed. The whodunnit aspect wasn't developed enough. All in all, it was mostly a coming of age story reminiscent of The Body. King writes with a great conversational tone that is easy to read, and he is great at evoking nostalgia. But dammit, I bought the book for the spooky carnival, so I'm rather disappointed at not getting what I expected. Another review claimed that Joyland was better than Dr. Sleep. I couldn't disagree more. Dr. Sleep had the thrill factor I expect from King - and thankfully, he didn't botch the ending (kind of an iffy thing with King). As with many King books, I've read Dr. Sleep a few times. Joyland was a slow and utterly forgettable 1 timer. I am not going to describe the plot. It has been done in many other reviews, probably more adequately than I could do it, as the book has been around for several years. I just want to say that this book renewed my faith that the old Stephen King is alive and well, and his story telling skills are still very much intact. I was absolutely enthralled by this book. I felt swallowed up by the story, immersed in the atmosphere of Joyland amusement park and particularly, in our protagonist, Devin Jones', and his 21st summer. I enjoyed the collateral characters, all of them. They were sufficiently developed and I felt I knew who they were. This is a book I will read again and most probably, I will purchase the audio version for further enjoyment. It was one of those books I didn't want to stop reading but dreaded finishing. It is a favorite, for sure, and I highly recommend it, especially if you are waxing nostalgic about the good old days when you loved reading Stephen King.
